Days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, summer is approaching. This means that golf season is here! Whether you are just getting into the game, are a seasoned vet, or Happy Gilmore, the game can be enjoyable for everyone (until you shank it straight into the woods).
Western Oklahoma is filled with golf courses for all levels of golfers, and despite being very flat, there is some variety among courses. After some research and speaking to College Minister and avid golfer Kelly Tomasi about some golf courses in the area, here are some different course options for golf fans around the area:
Prairie West Golf Club. 3500 Lyle Rd, Weatherford, OK 73096
The closest option to the campus of SWOSU is Prairie West Golf Club. The club is located in Rader Park. Prices for Prairie West can be found here. While a little more expensive than some of the other courses, Prairie West is in great shape and features some of the best greens in western Oklahoma. The club features a driving range, a putting green, and a chipping area. With lights on in the area, you can even go to the driving range after dark! This club also features Prairie West Nights on Saturdays and Sundays from 6pm to 10:30pm for those 21 and older. Information can be found on the club’s Facebook.
Overall, Weatherford is a course that is a little bit better for those with more experience. It is recommended that beginners play the white tees, and those with a little more experience play the blue tees.
Riverside Golf Course. 10329 N 2265 Rd, Clinton, OK 73601
The next closest option to the campus of SWOSU is Riverside Golf Course. The course sits on the northeast side of town, alongside the Washita River. Prices for the Riverside Golf Course can be found here. Unique to this course are semesterly rates for college students. A good option for regular players. The driving range is not as big as Weatherford’s and lacks lights, but there is still a nice putting green.
Clinton is a good option for those with all different levels of experience. However, for those with less experience, the price and course found at Clinton might be a better option as opposed to Weatherford.
Elk City Golf & Country Club. Lakeridge Rd, Elk City, OK 73644
A little bit further than the first two courses is Elk City Golf & Country Club. Prices for Elk City can be found here. Elk City features a brand-new clubhouse as well. On the Golf Club’s website, it says the course has a “short, scenic, fair, and challenging layout that plays to a par of 71.” The website also mentions the strength of the course lies in the par threes.
“The real strength of Elk City Golf & Country Club’s layout lies in a set of five excellent Par-3 holes that will test the patience and ability of all.”
For those who want to take a drive, Elk City is a good option for golfers of all levels of experience.
Roman Nose State Park Golf Course & Pro Shop. 3236 S Hwy 8A Watonga, OK 73772
Argubly the most unique course on this list is Roman Nose. Lying in the state park, for those wanting to make the drive north, this course is worth it. Prices for Roman Nose can be found here. With canyons and ravines, this course definitely stands out as opposed to some of the other, flatter courses found in western Oklahoma. However, with this type of course setup, it is recommended for one to bring a lot of balls. Especially novices! Roman nose lacks a driving range but does have putting greens.
This course is definitely one of the more difficult ones on this list, so those with less experience might want to approach with caution!
Fort Sill Golf Course. 1270 Quinette Rd, Fort Sill, OK 73503.
With the least available information and the longest drive, those who want to play Fort Sill Golf Course should call ahead to gather some more information. Visitors have to get a guest pass from a certain gate, so golfers should look into this before arriving. Pricing for the Fort Sill Golf Course can be found here. Fort Sill features a course with a mix of easier and more challenging holes and is an overall very fun course. This course features a restaurant, Mulligans with a tasty breakfast and lunch menu.
While there are many more great golf courses in western Oklahoma, these are just highlights of some within reasonable driving distance. It is recommended that golfers call ahead of time, as pricing, hours, and other information could change or not be included within this article as a whole. Get out there and experience some of western Oklahoma’s best golfing!
