Southwestern Oklahoma State University gets its first season win, 19-3, this past Saturday at East Central.
The Dawgs have broken a 13 game losing streak with this win, and gave Coach Andrew Rice’s first collegiate win. The team showed a real drive to get this win, and seems to be coming together on the field.
The first points of the day didn’t come until the 2nd quarter by SWOSU. Kicker Ethan McBee kicked a 37 yard field goal to put the Dawgs ahead 3-0 with 7 minutes until the half. This wasn’t the only field goal kicked this quarter by McBee. He went on with 22 seconds left until half to score another 39 yd field goal, putting SWOSU up 6-0.
During the third quarter SWOSU was able to score the first touchdown of the night when quarterback Kai Kunz was able to break free to score a 42 yd touchdown to put the Dawgs ahead 13-0, along with a kick from McBee for the extra point. ECU did end up responding with its own 36 yard field goal by Brandon Perez. The game was now at 13-3.
Kai Kunz wasn’t finished yet and came back during the fourth quarter to score another touchdown for the Bulldogs. He was able to go 17 yd to reach the endzone. This put the game at 19-3 when the extra point was missed. This is where the game ended, giving the Dawgs their first season win.
Not mentioned above but a major takeaway in this game was SWOSU’s defense. The Dawgs had not one, not two, but four interceptions on the night. Two of these came from Desmond Greene putting him at 3 interceptions total so far this season.
SWOSU is looking forward to carrying this momentum into this weekend when they will defend their home ground against Southern Nazarene, Saturday at 6pm.
