Each fall, all incoming freshmen are required to enroll in SWOSU Connect. The basic idea of the course is for students to familiarize themselves with the campus and the community of Weatherford as a whole while learning from fellow SWOSU Students, or Orientation Leaders.
One activity that the students get to partake in while being in the class is SWOSU Serves. The idea of the project is “SWOSU Serves provides you with the opportunity to actively engage with the community in a service-learning project. Service Learning is high impact for you and the people you are serving. When you are working to help others through a class project, the experience you gain helps you build leadership skills, practice teamwork, broaden your insights into social issues and strengthens your sense of community.”
Some projects that students have completed in the past include picking up trash around town, making goodie bags for different departments, writing thank you notes, volunteering around town, and more.
This week, my SWOSU connect class had the opportunity to complete our service project at the Pioneer Center located right here in Weatherford. We decorated cupcakes and interacted with some of the elderly people who attend the center.
