Hidden Pictures by: Jason Rekulak
Hidden Pictures is about Mallory Quinn, who is a recovering addict. She has been in need of a job since getting out of rehab and has applied to work for the Maxwells. The Maxwells have a little boy named Teddy and they need Mallory to come work as a live-in nanny for them. It seems like all you could ever ask for in a job; a place to live, eat, work. This of course as you can assume didn’t last too long as the little boy teddy loves to draw. His pictures start out supercute, normal. Then they become weird, or disturbing. Teddy has an imaginary friend called Anya, these pictures show more than what a 5yr old boy should be drawing. Mallory alerts the Maxwells who seem a little too not concerned but they end up taking Teddy’s drawings away. This doesn’t stop the drawings as they begin to show up on walls and on the doorstep to the house. They are very advanced drawings, way to advance for a 5yr old. Mallory is trying to figure out what has happened in that house and how Teddy is related. It begins to connect but it may be too late for Mallory to get out. A warning with this book that is more paranormal than you would think, if that is what interests you. It is also good to note that this book is being created into a netflix film. It is always good to read the book first.
Fantasy:
Fourth Wing by: Rebecca Yarros
This is a four book series about Violet. She lives in Navarre where you either, once of age, enter a riders quadrant, scribe, or healer. She has also wanted to be a scribe just like her father. But once he passed her mother stepped in. Her mother is the General over the riders. Violet had no choice. Violet is a small, not super athletic girl, she wasn’t expected to make it super far. The riders are riders of dragons. They are the defenders of their nation, they fight the battles. Violet doesn’t want any part of it, until she meets other people who want her dead(due to who her mother is). She decides she has to fight if she wants to live. She makes it all the way to what is called threshing. This is where the dragons pick their riders. Dragons make the decision here, not the riders. She gets paired and it may be more than she thought(can’t spoil that part). She is now feared by her whole class. She is still fighting her internal battles with family, friends, and boy drama. She wants to make her mother proud but is it ever enough? This book has more details than I can share as it would throw all the spoilers. It is also being made into a tv series set to come out in the next year.
