It’s that time that spring sports are in full swing and the SWOSU teams are ready. Here is an overall so far of spring sports.
Mens/Womens Basketball:
Both the womens and the mens SWOSU basketball teams have secured spots in the GAC tournament. Womens basketball will take on the number 4 team, Southeastern Oklahoma State at 12pm Friday in Fort Smith Arkansas. The men’s team will take on the number 3 team Harding at 8pm in Fort Smith Arkansas as well. Both teams also had individual GAC Honors. From the mens team, MJ Warrior and Tobias Roland were given All-GAC Honor mention for their season. Warrior finished the season with the most assists in the whole conference, 142. Tobias was 6th in the made free throws in the conference with 96. The women’s team had Averi Zinn awarded with Second team All-GAC. She averaged 11 points a game putting her 15th in the whole conference. If you would like to watch SWOSU Basketball games they will be live streamed on the GAC Sports Network.
Mens/Womens Golf:
The men’s golf team started their spring season this past Tuesday at the Las Vegas Desert Classic. For the men’s team it was a tough start. The top 16 teams in the nation were there out of 50 total teams. The Dawgs fought and finished 19th overall. The women’s team also began their season this past Tuesday at Diffee Ford/Lincoln Invite. SWOSU showed up ready. They took home first place here, beating everyone by 6 strokes. Their competition also held some GAC competitors and nationally ranked teams. The women’s next tournament will be in Miami Shores in Florida at the Buccaneer Invitational. The men’s team will be in Edmond Oklahoma at the Oak Tree Invitational.
Women’s Track and Field:
The outdoor season for track and field began on March 1st at the Hendrix Invitational in Conway Arkansas. This was a strong start for the Dawgs with many personal records beaten and one school record. The personal best came from the field events. Jessica Kern and Jaci Shelton who are both throwers and a PR. Along with two jumpers, Jackie Horne and Morgan Ritchie. Jackie had 5.23m in long jump and Morgan with 9.83m in the triple jump. The school record was beaten in the 400m hurdles by Breegan Barnett. She finished in one minute and eight seconds and was second place here. The girls will head to Coffeyville Kansas for the Dean Pryor Invitational March 13th.
Rodeo:
SWOSU rodeo has not yet begun their spring season. They open it up on March 7-9th in Ft. Scott Kansas against Ft. Scott Community College. They will be at home April 10-12 for the 52nd Annual SWOSU Rodeo.
Baseball:
SWOSU baseball has been in full gear since february. They have already begun conference play and are 2-6 in conference and 9-7 overall. So far they have faced strong competition with Harding, OBU, and Arkansas Tech. The last series they played was this past weekend against OBU. They went 1 and 2 in the series. The game they won was 8-5. Going into the 8th inning the game was 5-5. Eric Foufoulas was up to bat with bases loaded and was able to get the game winning hit that scored one and then OBU gave up a throwing error scoring two more. The Dawgs want to carry this win into this weekend when they face SNU in Bethany Oklahoma Friday March 7 at 12 and 3pm and Saturday March 8th with the time not set yet.
Softball:
SWOSU Softball has also been playing since february and has begun conference play. They are sitting 2-4 in conference and 9-9 overall. This past Tuesday they played in Witchta Kansas for a non conference doubleheader against Newman. This was one of the best outings for the Dawgs taking both games from them. Winning the first game 7-3. Jaycee Mckee got her first win in the circle pitching the last 6 innings after relieving Alexis Taylor in the circle. She only gave up three hits after being put in. The second game was a 5-4 win. The bulldogs were swinging it both games with multiple girls going 4-4 or 3-3 at the plate. Riley Lusk also also got her first win of the year this game pitching 4 innings and only allowing 3 hits and one run. The Dawgs will now face SNU this weekend in Weatherford Oklahoma at 1 and 3pm on Friday March 7th and 12pm Saturday March 8th.
