America’s favorite pastime is nearly in full swing! D1 College softball kicked off on February 6th, D1 Baseball on February 14th and MLB opening day is set for Thursday, March 27th 2025. To celebrate, this month’s movie column highlights four classic baseball movies perfect for this time of year.

In this 1993 movie, a group of young boys in a small neighborhood connect over their love of baseball. The film follows Scotty Smalls who is new to town and makes friends with a group of kids who play baseball at the Sandlot. The movie features their fun and lasting adventures. However, the group finds themself in trouble when Smalls borrows his step dad’s ball that gets hit over a fence.

An all female baseball league is formed in the midwest when a group of athletic men were drafted during WWII. The film highlights sisters Dottie and Kit who join the league to spark their success despite their own sibling rivalry.

When an accident causes a young boy, Henry, to have an outstanding talent of pitching, the Chicago Cubs don’t have a choice but to sign the junior high student to their roster. However, Henry doesn’t do well under the pressure or target on his back so pitcher Chet teaches Henry how to live his new life in the big leagues.

This 2002 movie is based on a true story about a coach who discovered that his dream wasn’t too late to come true. Jim Morris didn’t make it out of the minor leagues due to a career ending shoulder injury. Now a high school baseball coach in Texas, Jim is given an opportunity to make a deal with his team and try out for the Major Leagues if they win the district championship. His dream comes true when he is given the chance to play. This film is a reminder that it is never too late to pursue any dream you have.
