SWOSU softball is now on a 7 game win streak after taking two wins against NWOSU on tuesday. This is the longest win streak Bulldog softball has had since 2019.
The first game of this two game series was the one that mattered. It was the final conference game against NWOSU and the Dawgs needed the win to avoid a sweep from the riders. The last game against them one big inning is why they lost. The Dawgs knew what to expect and were ready for it.
SWOSU was able to score first, putting up one run in the first and one run in the second but NWOSU had a response and the big inning was coming. They were able to score four runs in the bottom of the 4th putting them ahead 4-2. This was the only time the riders scored this game and the Dawgs were fired up and ready to fight back for a win.
The fifth inning rolled around and SWOSU’s leader in hits, Chesnie Hewitt, was to lead off the inning. She got in the box and first pitch ripped one to right field and was able to reach first base. The energy was going, and the Bulldogs knew this was the inning to go get a win. Jayden Hook was up after Chesnie and had another line drive to right and it went under the right fielder’s glove. This gave Chesnie the opportunity to cross home and she took it, Jayden was able to proceed to second. This gave the Dawgs the rally they needed. The following hitters had another triple and multiple singles. SWOSU was able to have three runs across the plate here and put them ahead 5-4.
Alexis Taylor was in the circle and shut down the riders after the four run inning and had 12 strikeouts. She also only allowed 8 singles in this game and nothing more. The Dawgs also scored one more run in the top of the 7th for a little insurance run before closing out the game in a 1-2-3 inning. This gave SWOSU the win at 6-4. The team was more than happy as this win gave them more of a chance to make the GAC tournament. They want to make history and they want to make their mark in this program.
Going into the second game SWOSU knew they could keep the streak alive with another win and make history since 2019. This game is non-conference but it does count towards the overall record. The game was back and forth until the third when it was all tied up 2-2. Chesnie Hewitt again led the inning off with a triple and this made a statement and it was just shy of going over the fence. It was another 3 run inning as Emily Wendel added another triple this inning and Katie Boline and Jayden Hook both singled.
That wasn’t the only big inning SWOSU had in this game. The 6th inning was another 3 run inning putting them ahead 8-3. These three runs came off of Chesnie Hewitt’s bat as she was able to score the two girls on base with a mile-high homerun over left field. It looked like the ball was in the clouds, it was a no doubt homer.
Jaycee McKee came in in the third inning to shut down the riders and hold them at bay the rest of the game. She only allowed two walks, the only hit she allowed was off a double in the bottom of the 7th which also gave NWOSU one run as there was a girl at 1st who was walked. The Dawgs only needed one more out following this hit and it came from a ground ball to third. SWOSU was more than proud of this win as they are fighting to keep this win streak alive.
The Bulldogs want to carry all these wins into this weekend as they travel to Arkansas Tech. If they are able to win this series they can secure a spot in the GAC tournament. It will be a huge weekend and pressures will be high.
