SWOSU Jazz Groups Perform Sunday
Jazz is in the air as the Southwestern Oklahoma State University jazz ensembles perform in concert this Sunday, November 14, on the Weatherford campus.
The fall concert for SWOSU Jazz Ensemble ‘A’, ‘B’, and Jazz Combo will be at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
Dr. Richard Tirk, professor of music, said the concert will feature music by Sammy Nestico, Dizzy Gillespie, Kris Berg and other notable jazz composers. Included in the concert will be a sneak peak of the music by the 52nd annual SWOSU Jazz Festival headline artist Sherrie Maricle. Her tune Slambo features the trombone section led by graduate assistant Anthony Valentine.
Jazz B will also feature a graduate assistant conductor, Todd Bowles. Bowles, originally from Cache, will lead the band in a great swingin’ chart, Corner Pocket. This concert will serve as a warmup for Jazz B’s upcoming tour of Hinton, Clinton and Weatherford. This will be the first time in Tirk’s SWOSU history that Jazz B will be hitting the road.
“Both bands are playing at a very high level and we’re excited to get out into the community to share some great tunes,” Tirk said.
