On Tuesday night SWOSU volleyball celebrated 9 seniors in their last home game of the year. This was also the night they secured and won the GAC conference for the first time ever in the history of SWOSU volleyball.
This match was against a rival school, Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The Dawgs defeated the Rangers 3-1. This win didn’t just come from the team, the community behind them was an amazing sight. There was another record crowd at this game, one of the loudest this year. Almost every seat was filled.
The first set was the only one SWOSU dropped last night. They lost 25-17. The nerves were showing but after this set it seemed they relaxed and were ready to get to work. They didn’t let Northwestern score more than 18 points the rest of the night.
Defense was rolling for the Dawgs with Zoey Sparks having 6 blocks on the night, along with 13 kills for offense. Lacy Mott was able to match Zoey’s kills with 13 and added some with 2 aces.
SWOSU’s last set was what secured the win, matching Northwesterns first set 25-17. The crowd was in an uproar. This is history for the dawgs, this team will be remembered for the 14-1 season they have had.
I spoke with senior Zoey Sparks after the game and she stated, “I have never been more proud of this team and our coaches and community. We couldn’t do this alone. I couldn’t ask for a better last home game, this is what we work for day in and day out. We are not finished yet, we are ready to carry this into the tournament and continue what we have done all year long.”
The last game of the year will be against Southeastern in Durant Oklahoma this Thursday, and then on to the GAC tournament where they hope to win it all.
