SWOSU offers so many different clubs for students to join. It can be overwhelming to figure out which one is the best fit for you. Every week The Southwestern will be highlighting different clubs on campus, giving you an overview of each one so you know which one is best for you or which one spikes your interest. This week we will be highlighting SWOSU’s Fire Club.
The fire club is combined with students who are training to be wildland firefighters and students who have an interest in firefighting. The club the past few years has participated in helping other firefighters in the area on prescribed burns and even assisted in helping put out some of the wildfires from last year. The club members aren’t on the front lines there but they are put to work and help clean the areas the fire has already burned. It’s a great opportunity for the members to get experience outside of prescribed burns, which are more controlled than a wildfire.
They just put in a new president of the club as well, Tatum Cummings. She just spent her summer up in the mountains as a wildland firefighter and is back at SWOSU to finish her degree. She has experience she is excited to share with all the new club members and the returning ones. Speaking with her, the plan for the club this year is “We are gonna burn.”
Fun fact about the SWOSU Fire Club: they have won Battle of the Bulldogs two years in a row and are hoping to go for their 3rd. If you don’t know what Battle of the Bulldogs is during homecoming week and Monday-Friday, there are different games each club participates in, and where you finish gets tallied up, and the highest points at the end on Friday wins. It’s a super fun week that every club looks forward to. You get to become closer with the people in the club and just get to enjoy different games like trivia, scavenger hunts, etc.
If this seems like something you would be interested in, contact club President Tatum Cummings.
