World Languages Week Activities Planned First Week of April at SWOSU

The fifth annual World Languages Week will be celebrated at Southwestern Oklahoma State University April 4-7 on the Weatherford campus.

The event will be held virtually through ZOOM; everyone interested in languages can join the events. Please email Dr. Tugba Sevin at [email protected] for more information. The ZOOM meeting ID to attend these events is: 924 8101 7886

On Tuesday, April 5, at 3:30 p.m., participants will take a virtual trip to Sweden and Nigeria. Alexandra Ohliw from Sweden and Deborah Ugwu from Nigeria will talk about interesting traditions, superstitions and festivals in their countries. Ohliw and Ugwu will also give a mini-language lesson in their native languages.

After the presentation, there will be a session called “80 Seconds Around the World Open Mic” in which the audience will share their experiences about visiting different countries or other states in America.

The first day of World Languages Week will end with the announcement of the SWOSU- Weatherford Rotary World Languages Scholarship recipient.

On Wednesday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Tugba Sevin will lead the members’ initiation ceremony for Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Languages Honor Society. Alpha Mu Gamma is a highly prestigious honor society, and all members are required to meet high standards in language learning.

The SWOSU chapter (Alpha Alpha Eta) will add five new members: Jaycen Carel, Arpana James, Danae Karashiali, Shannon Marcar and Deborah Ugwu. The new members will receive their membership certificates and honor cords for their achievements in Italian, Spanish, American Sign Language and English as a second language.

After the ceremony, there will be a Q&A session, where the audience can ask questions to the new members and to the faculty about languages opportunities at SWOSU, benefits of learning foreign languages and how learning languages changed their lives.

The afternoon will end with Jon Woltz, systems & electronic resources librarian at the SWOSU Al Harris Library, who will show how to find online language resources at the SWOSU library database.

“We encourage everyone to join us in all events during the World Languages Week and to show support to foreign language instruction in western Oklahoma” said Sevin said.
