First-Generation Student Celebration Planned Monday at SWOSU

Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s 2nd annual First-Generation Student Celebration is this Monday, November 8, at 3 p.m. on the Weatherford campus. Everyone is invited.

The SWOSU Academic Support Center (ASC) is hosting the event in the East Ballroom of the Memorial Student Center. There will be food, drinks and fun.

First-Generation is an event celebrating students and faculty whose parents never completed a four-year degree.

SWOSU ASC Academic Coach Dillon Martone said a total of 16 students entered an essay contest in conjunction with this event, sharing their own journey and motivations as first-generation college students. The top three winners will be announced at the event. Prizes are first place, $500 scholarship; second place, $100 gift card; and third place, SWOSU gift basket.

Thirty-nine percent of students at SWOSU are 1st Generation, meaning their parents never completed a 4-year degree. For more information about the November 8 event, contact Martone at [email protected].
