SWOSU spring athletics is in full swing, and there has been a lot going on. If you’ve been struggling to keep up, here is an update on Women’s Basketball, Men’s Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Rodeo, Track and Field, and Golf.
Women’s Basketball:
The women’s basketball team is on fire right now. They have won three consecutive games and are looking to carry this as they are still trying to secure a spot in the Great American Conference (GAC) tournament. The most recent game was against Southern Arkansas University, where SWOSU was able to get a 58-41 win. No. 25 Landry Allen is still leading this team and having record-breaking games. She is not letting anyone by her on defense, letting her teammates take control on offense. This was an important win for the Bulldogs as it tied them with ECU in sixth place in the conference. They are set to play against each other this Thursday in Ada, Oklahoma. A win here will set SWOSU apart and give them a more secure chance of making the tournament.
Men’s Basketball:
The men’s basketball team is also still trying to secure a spot in the GAC tournament. They are tied with our rival schools, NWOSU, in sixth. In the previous game against Southern Arkansas, they were able to find a win after three losses in a row. This was another high-scoring win for the Bulldogs at 82-75. It was a game filled with season highs for multiple SWOSU players: Elijah Jordan with 20 points, Ty Frierson with 16 points, and Tucker Shepherd with 14 points. Having a strong game like this is what they needed to get back on track for the tournament. Being tied with NWOSU shouldn’t last long if they can find some wins in the last two games of the season. They are set to play East Central in Ada, Oklahoma, at 7:30 pm this Thursday.
Baseball:
SWOSU baseball just recently started conference play. They have had one full series against Harding University, where they took the first game and lost the next two. This wasn’t a worry, though, as they then played SNU this past Tuesday and took home a massive win,28-14. This game was a home-run party for SWOSU with seven home runs over seven innings played. They also tallied up 13 singles. Some runs were given up to SNU, but the offense had their pitchers’ backs. If they can keep this up, they are on track to break program records. They are now headed to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where they will face Oklahoma Baptist in a three-game series Friday-Saturday.
Softball:
Bulldog Softball has also started conference play this past week. They faced Harding University and took three tough losses. During the pre-season, they managed to find three wins despite mostly playing ranked teams. They are also under a new coach this season, Cheyenne Mahy. If they can find a conference win soon, hopefully, they can carry that confidence for the rest of the season and get back into the GAC tournament. SWOSU is about to have its home opener this weekend against Oklahoma Baptist at 2 pm Friday. They can use any support you can give, get out there, and support your fellow Dawgs.
Rodeo:
SWOSU women’s rodeo started its spring season this past weekend at K-State. They also took home a win. The Bulldogs had multiple top-five finishers in different events. Braylee Ward was third in Barrel racing with a 15.92 ride. Reagan McIntyre tied for second in goat tying. This was just the start; they went on to score high in most events, getting them this win. The men’s rodeo team struggled to find its footing in this spring opener, finishing 12th out of 16. They have some time to get back to work before their next rodeo in Fort Scott, Kansas March 13th-14th.
Track and Field:
Bulldogs Track and Field began their spring season two weeks ago at an indoor meet in Pittsburg, Kansas. Madison Radke was the one runner SWOSU had to secure a PR in the 600 yds. This meet helped them get their footing for the outdoor meets they are about to face. This coming weekend, they will travel to Conway, Arkansas, for the Hendrix Invitational. This is also their first outdoor meet, and they hope to find some more PRs to get this season going.
Women and Men’s Golf:
The women’s golf team began their season out at the Southern Invitational. Overall, the girls finished 10th out of 15 teams. Maria Velilla was able to get third place to help boost the bulldogs into the top 10. They now head to the Diffee Ford/Lincoln Invitational in Edmond, Oklahoma March 2nd-3rd. This is the closest they will be to Weatherford this season, so if you want to support the women’s team, this would be the one to go to. The men’s team will start their spring season next week when they travel to Boulder Creek, Nevada for the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
