A preliminary report detailing some of what happened in November’s anhydrous ammonia leak has been released by the National Transportation Safety Board. The report states that the driver stopped at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites for the evening, then realized the manway cover underneath the truck was leaking. The driver was unsuccessful in stopping the leak. 74 individuals were injured as a result of the incident, and 500 to 1,000 individuals were evacuated. The report states the damage exceeds $100,000.
After the site was designated as safe, the tanker was transported to the Airgas facility in Oklahoma City. The investigation is still ongoing, and the report states that “Future investigative activity will focus on conducting interviews and detailed examination of the cargo tank, the cargo tank maintenance and repair history, the actions of the driver, and the on-scene safety practices of emergency response personnel.”
